metal roofing contractorsSo, it is time for a new roof, but you have no idea what kind is right for you. Metal roofing seems like the perfect option, but asphalt shingle roofs are the ones you see all the time. How are you supposed to know which one is the right choice for you? Lucky for you, Bailey’s Roofing is here! We put together this guide so that you can be sure you’re making the correct choice for your new roof installation. Let’s get started!

Types of Metal Roofing

There are multiple different forms of metal roofs, but overall, metal roofs are durable and more energy-efficient than asphalt shingle roofs. Types of metal roofing include shingles, standing seam, and metal tile. On top of that, these roofs come in different metals that roofers use for a variety of reasons.

Tin Roofing

Tin is a very inexpensive option that’s relatively pliable and easy to shape; however, it’s not a material that roofing companies use as often anymore. The term “tin roofing” usually refers to steel or aluminum nowadays.

Steel

Steel is one of the more expensive options for roof replacement, but it is also one of the most durable. It’s known for being able to withstand expansions and contractions of your house during different weather conditions.

Aluminum

An aluminum metal roof is more on the affordable side of things. If you’re looking for an option that is good for the environment, aluminum is the perfect sustainable option because it’s recyclable. It also has no corrosion qualities and works well with expansion and contraction, much like steel.

Copper

A copper roof will cost you quite a bit more money, but it is recyclable like aluminum. Another plus to this kind of roof is that it is often welded. Which is super helpful when installing a new roof, and it usually lasts for about 100 years.

Zinc

Zinc is another option for your new metal roof, but it’s not the most recommended. Although it has a long life expectancy and is recyclable, it’s somewhat susceptible to hail damage and other impacts.

Asphalt Roofs

It’s safe to say that asphalt shingles are the more common form of roofing, and that’s for a good reason. The components of this type of roof, such as the matting, asphalt coating, and granule surface, give it it’s durability. The granules are what protect the top from different weather conditions and UV rays. There’s also an alternative form of this type of roof called architectural shingles, and those are the same type of material except they are heavier, thicker, and more expensive. However, as you would imagine, the architectural shingles last longer than the traditional asphalt ones, and they have a longer warranty.

The Decision: Metal or Asphalt Shingle Roofing?

Now you know the differences between these two types of roofing, but you still need to figure out which one is best for you.

Well, metal roofing is best when you’re looking to get more out of your new roof, such as increased resistance to weather, the ability to re-paint it, durability, higher curb-appeal, longevity, high resale value, and energy efficiency.

An asphalt shingle roof is better suited for you if you want low costs both in labor and materials, if you’re going to fix your roof yourself, or if you want the more traditional appearance that also might match better with the neighborhood.
