We’ve officially reached the peak of summer in Oklahoma, so you know what that means. There are scorching hot temperatures and sometimes severe storms coming your way. It’s important to be aware of the kind of weather you’ll be experiencing because your roof needs to be prepared to withstand that weather. That’s why Bailey’s Roofing and Construction are giving you summer roofing tips for Oklahoma residents.

Mold, Moss, and Algae

Don’t be fooled by how hot and sunny it gets this time of year. Mold, moss, and algae still make an appearance around these months because of the humidity that comes with the heat. Algae specifically can build up on your roof and eat at your shingles, leading to roof decay. It can also form in your gutters and lead to blockage. Moss causes shingles to curl and crack, and mold can cause damage as well, so you need to inspect your roof or have it inspected by a professional to look for these things and have them removed so as not to cause more damage than has already been done.

Check the Attic

Attics heat up a lot in the summer in Oklahoma. Some can reach up to 150 degrees because your roof absorbs heat that flows into the attic. Your attic needs to be properly ventilated for many reasons, but especially to reduce the heat and protect your roof from damage. If not done correctly, heat in the attic can make your shingles crack and curl, leading to roof leaks. Make sure your roof doesn’t have any moisture or mold as well since this can lead to more damage and leaks.

Trim the Trees

It’s always good to trim trees, especially those that hang over your roof. Trees that cover your roof are a recipe for disaster when those harsh winds and storms come rolling through. You need to trim them in the summer so they don’t break and fall on your house, causing damage to your roof.

Clean the Gutters

Gutters are a crucial element to your roof. They drain the water from your roof and direct it away from the house. You need to clean your gutters in the summer so that when the rain comes, they can drain properly. Blockage in the gutters leads to poor drainage and damage to your roof.
